Uterine Color

A life-saving exam!

What is the cervix?

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. During pregnancy, it plays a crucial role, functioning as a protective barrier for the baby.

What is your relationship with premature birth?

There is a direct relationship between the measure of the cervix and the risk of prematurity (born before 37 weeks). The neck is considered normal if its length is greater than 2.5 cm and short, when it is less than 2.5 cmShort colos have an increased risk of preterm labor..

In some pregnant women, this occurs due to cervical incompetencea condition where the cervix cannot support the weight of the growing baby.

When should the exam be performed?

The cervical assessment exam can be performed at any stage of pregnancy, but for the evaluation of preterm birth risk, it is recommended between the 20 and 24 weeks of pregnancytogether with the performance of the ultrasound Morphological of the 2nd Trimester.

In specific cases, such as pregnant women with a history of complications, reports of isthmo-cervical incompetence, or twin pregnancies, it can be performed earlier, according to medical guidance.

Why is your evaluation so important?

We know that PREMATURITY is the leading cause of fetal death worldwide. The evaluation of the cervix mmonitor high-risk pregnancies, such as those with a history of preterm birth or uterine surgeries. (CAF), evaluates the need for interventions, how the Cervical cerclage (a procedure to prevent early dilation of the cervix), can you identify up to 70% of women that will have preterm labor, but 30% will have preterm labor even with a normal exam.

Normal Colo:

Greater than 2.5 cm

Risk of prematurity: 3%

Short Colo:

Less than 2.5 cm

Risk of prematurity: 20%

Very short neck:

Less than 1.0 cm

Risk of prematurity: 50%

Does the touch not see the same thing?

Unfortunately not...

When your obstetrician performs a pelvic exam on you, they can tell if the EXTERNAL opening (the outer hole) is closed, and whether the cervix is soft or firm. Ultrasound is the only way to see if the INTERNAL opening (small hole inside) is closed or not. Often the touch is normal, but the cervix is already fully dilated inside... We call this "constriction."

The identification of a short cervix may SAVE YOUR BABY'S LIFE!
